The average length of stay for persons admitted to a nursing home is 388 days according to the 1999 Nursing Home Survey, according to elderweb.com. For persons age 45 or older, the average length of stay is one year or less for men in 79% of the cases. Only 4% of men remain in a nursing home for 5 years or more, while 7% of women do.
